NEW! CPR FOR PARENTS One of the best things that you can do for your child is to learn and practice CPR. Now there is a new program that teaches Infant and Child CPR and provides the tools necessary to practice at home and share your knowledge with others. We now offer a class for parents and child care providers that includes infant and child CPR certification plus a FREE DVD and a CPR Teddy Kit for practice at home. CPR Teddy is a new product that helps people learn and practice infant and child CPR and choking emergency techniques. It looks like a soft, cuddly toy but it's much more! When you squeeze CPR Teddy's paw, a voice guides you through the steps then helps you practice your technique. A bright red heart on Teddy's chest shows you where to perform the compressions and his chest rises as you give rescue breaths. When you do the compressions, his bowtie lights up green or red to let you know if you are pressing correctly while a metronome helps you pace yourself. The CPR Teddy Kit comes complete with the bear, a 38 minute video that covers CPR, Choking Rescue and Childproofing Your Home and Car. For information on the dates and times of the class, please call toll-free 1-888-236 CPR1 Return to Top   Essentials The ASHI ESSENTIALS in Basic Emergency Care program is designed to arm laypersons with the minimum knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency care for injury or sudden illness during the brief interval between the incident and EMS/911 arrival. The program includes 4 modules: Module 1: Emergency Action Steps               Assessment of the Scene and Victim Module 2: Basic Life Support Airway Management and CPR Automated External Defibrillation Emergency Oxygen Module 3: Bloodborne Pathogens Module 4: Basic First Aid As is indicated by the title, only "essential" information is covered in this program. Essentials in Basic Emergency Care will not overwhelm students or cloud key objectives. Too often, more information is provided than what is actually needed. This can contribute to confusion in an emergency when it is critical to recall basic lifesaving steps. If the student is ready and desires additional information, he is encouraged to proceed to the other ASHI courses offered below. Return to Top Basic First Aid   The objective of this course is to familiarize the individual with the principles of first aid. This course is designed to prepare a person to recognize an emergency and to follow the “Assess, Alert, Attend” step plan of action for emergency care. The program will prepare participants to: Assess the scene and the victims Alert Emergency Medical Services Attend to the victim The content and activities of the course can be customized to most organizational needs, the needs of the students, and any requirements specific to job performance. The course can emphasize Pediatric care for day care personnel, teachers, parents, or for other individuals with specific needs for caring for children; Adult care for individuals providing care in the workplace, nursing homes, or other entities where adults may require care; and Universal care, a combination of Adult and Pediatric care including more advanced first aid techniques. Return to Top Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) This basic CPR course is intended for families, community members and/or employees who may need to respond to an emergency. This course is intended to convey and demonstrate the recommended lifesaving care that may be necessary at the scene of an emergency. It will include: Recognizing the risk factors for a heart attack and/or stroke information about normal heart and lung functions. How to recognize a life-threatening emergency, when and how to properly activate the emergency medical services system (EMS) How to make a difference in the outcome of emergencies How to provide basic life support What to do in cases of airway obstruction (choking) How to provide care for a life-threatening bleeding emergency How to provide basic care for someone who is in shock. This course can include CPR PRO for healthcare professionals; or Adult CPR; or Pediatric CPR; or a combined program (adult, child and infant CPR) for all others. Return to Top Automated External Defibrillator (AED) The goal of this course is to provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency, to recognize the emergency, call for help, and provide automated external defibrillation for a victim while using an AED unit until the EMS arrives. Return to Top   Blood Borne Pathogens The objective of this course is to familiarize employers, employees, and community members with blood borne pathogens. This course is designed to assist those who may be exposed to blood borne pathogens because of their job, to be in compliance with Blood borne Pathogen Standard (29 CFR 1910, 1030) promulgated by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. This program will familiarize students with exposure control plans, safe work practices, universal precautions, communication, and record keeping. Return to Top SCUBA Programs Every certified SCUBA diver should continue his education by taking courses specifically designed to teach divers how to handle diving emergencies. These courses include Scuba Lifesaving and Rescue Management (SLAM) and DAN Oxygen Provider Course. Although it is technically not a medical emergency course, divers should also be certified to use Nitrox, or oxygen enriched air, to provide a margin of safety in helping to avoid decompression sickness injuries.
